INTRODUCTION

My name is Jane D'Arcy.  I graduated from The British College of Osteopathic Medicine twenty one years ago, during that time I have worked at various group practises around the U.K.  I am a member of the General Osteopathic Council (The GOSC regulates, promotes and develops the profession, maintaining a statutory register of those entitled to practise), this means I can call myself a registered osteopath.  In order to continue annual registration with the GOSC I am expected to take part in continued professional development.  This involves participating in courses, talks, practical classes or attending lectures on matters that relate to osteopathic medicine and practice.

WHAT IS OSTEOPATHY ?

Osteopathy recognises that much of the pain and disabilities we suffer stems from abnormalities in our body's structure and function.  Osteopath's treat damaged parts of the body such as muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints in order to balance the body and improve its efficiency, so that it will function with the minimal wear and tear.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN VISITING AN OSTEOPATH

On your first visit, the osteopath will begin by taking a detailed record of your medical history.  This is followed by an examination whereby the patient is asked to remove some clothing so that  a series of observations and biomechanical assessments can made.

The osteopath will then apply a highly developed sense of touch to identify points of weakness throughout the body.  Further investigations may include an x-ray, blood tests.  This will allow a full diagnosis of the problem and enable the osteopath to tailor a treatment according to the patients needs.

Your osteopath should inform you of what is happening throughout the consultation and make you feel at ease so that if you have any questions or queries you can ask.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE ?

Osteopathic treatment involves gentle manual techniques aimed at easing pain, reducing swelling and improving mobility, circulation and lymphatic drainage.  Often, this involves manipulation of joints which can result in an audible "crack" which is simply the sound of gas bubbles popping in the fluid of the joints.

Advice regarding diet, supplementation, exercise, hydrotherapy, good posture will be offered where appropriate.
